Sugar Cane’s Indian Madras Shirt is Back

Madras has been in shorter supply this season, but you can always count on Sugar Cane to fill the gaps. They’re back with a perfect Madras button-down for the warmer months.

Madras is a distinctive cotton fabric crafted, as the name suggests, in Madras, India (now called Chennai). Dating back to the 16th Century, Madras is a lightweight, plaid fabric used to make summer garments across the world, from its native India to the Ivy League, which arguably gave it its current fame. True Madras, when still made in Chennai, must be handwoven and carded, rather than combed, which gives if its characteristic slubby texture. The dyes are also key to the nature of Madras—they bleed giving Sugar Cane’s shirt more and more charm and uniqueness the more it’s worn, washed, and loved.

Sugar Cane has combined this incredible fabric with Japanese manufacturing processes to create what might be the perfect checked summer shirt. Throw it open over a white t-shirt, sleeves rolled up during the day, or tuck it into a pair of khaki chinos for a summertime tribute to Hayashida’s Take Ivy.

Available at Blue in Green for $165.
