Fade of the Day – Naked & Famous Sumi Ink Coated Weird Guy (15 Months, 2 Washes, 2 Soaks)

The folks at Naked & Famous are always thinking of new ways to push the boundaries of denim, trying to add something special to a pair of five-pocket jeans. Today’s Fade of the Day is a perfect example, with this pair of Sumi Ink Coated Weird Guys, submitted by Heddels reader Mark of Colorado. These jeans aren’t just deep indigo; the original indigo dye is coated with “Sumi ink,” a popular ink amongst Japanese calligraphers.

In one year and three months, the black ink has broken down and washed off, revealing the deep, dark indigo hues beneath. We have some whiskers developing in the lap, and, on the flip-side, some well established honeycombs. Mark has worn these jeans hard—doing everything from hiking to motorcycling—and that’s led to some damage on the lower leg, which he has patched himself.

Despite already having some solid fades, there is still plenty of dye left for Mark to work with, and, in another year’s time, these jeans will look even better.
